Hans Max Haupt is Convicted of Treason
German-born Hans Max Haupt was a naturalized U.S. citizen. His son, Herbert Haupt was among eight men recruited by Germany to sabotage the U.S. war effort in 1942. When Herbert Haupt returns to the United States by German U-Boat, he makes his way to Chicago to live with his parents. Hans Max Haupt is convicted of treason for providing aid and comfort to the enemy by providing shelter for his son,and helping him purchase an automobile and obtain a job. The Supreme Court upholds Haupt's conviction and he is sentenced to life imprisonment. Herbert Haupt and five of the saboteurs were tried by a military tribunal and executed in 1942. Two others were deported. This marks the first time that the Supreme Court upheld a treason conviction.
